His messengers told him the news of Esau's coming (Gen. 32:6-8) and Jacob became troubled and prayed for help and deliverance (Gen. 32:9-12). 9. Location and Physical Features:There is no doubt as to the situation of ancient Shechem. Terah, at the age of 200, decides to move his entire family, which includes his grandson Lot, to Haran (Genesis 11:31). The areas in Canaan which Abram spent most of his life were along the Route of the Patriarchs, namely in Shechem (Gen 12:6), Bethel and Ai (12:8; 13:2), Hebron (13:18; 14:13), and in the Negev (13:1; 20:1, notably Gerar). This curse proved true, for the citizens of Shechem formed a conspiracy against Abimelech, and he completely destroyed the city. (Gottwald, 1979: 563-564). The rains run through immovable ravines, and beside that river people cultivate their fields and water their livestock. I. The surrounding country is bleak and barren, the hills being marked by a succession of stony terraces, which may have suggested the form of the ladder in Jacob's famous dream. Judges 9:1 Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother's brothers, and spoke with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother's father, saying, Judges 9:2 "Please speak in the ears of all the men of Shechem,'Is it better for you that all the sons of Jerubbaal, who are seventy persons, rule over you, or that one rule over you?' And I think the principle should also apply even to those who grew up under parents who did a good jobparents who taught about Jesus and how He died for our sins. Depending on where we consider the undefined border between Phoenicia and Canaan to be, he was almost there. Jacob, now called Israel, sends Joseph to meet his brothers. 12. Genesis 37:13 Israel said to Joseph, "Aren't your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem? The city lies close to the foot of Gerizim. Abimelech, whose mother was a native of the city, persuaded the men of Shechem to make him king (Judges 9:1-6), evidently seeking a certain consecration from association with "the oak of the pillar that was in Shechem." 2. And at Abimelechs coronation, Jotham climbed Mount Gerizim and shouted a curse on Shechem for Abimelechs sin. It appears to have been captured by Joshua (8:7), and it was allotted to Benjamin (Josh 18:22).
